A Death is always shocking, but from someone so alive and cheerful like you it almost seems impossible.
Goodbye, Joe!!

can't possibly be true

How to imagine the world of sandsculpture without Joe?

I keep thinking that somehow this must all be just another of his pranks... that he will let the testimonials go on a little bit longer before he jumps out of the box and yells "gotcha!"

dammit dammit dammit

This sucks

I wish everybody who knew Joe the verry best and strength in remembering the great times we have had with him. We will all miss him, but lets make the memories of him last forever......and that wont be too difficult

I can't believe the news today

I have learned a lot from you and you gave me great joy in the short time that I have known you! I will never forget you and will think of you with love in my heart! I send your family and your friends my condolences.
I will miss you

What to say, many mthings come to mind. It makes me humble, thinking how much joe has done, a multitude of sand, sculptures and funny stuff. I will never forget him.

Jeroen Vande Vlag (fellow sand sculptor) August 29, 2006

Sculptors choice

Joe is such a great and generous spirit. He personifies all the good stuff that is sand sculpting. Always has, always will. He also exemplifies a symbiosis with the sand that transcends otherwise minor details, like what we do with the rest of our respective lives.
Sure, Joe can be a pain sometimes, with things like his dry jokes, clever pranks, untimely dying, constant teasing and noisy snoring (can I get a witness!?)
But Joe's heart is all love. That much is obvious to all who really know him. He lived life on his own terms sure, but he remains a positive energy force even in death. Sand sculpture is fleeting, but Joe's goodness is ever spreading like the ripple effect. That makes him a TRUE sand sculpting Grandmaster in my book.
Joe, I know what you would say here, "Yeah, yeah, lets go, Move it along folks,- nothing to see here..."
But I love you just the same...
...As ever,
Rich

There must be a good place for him, at that great sandcastle in the sky... His wit and talent will be sorely missed!

Matthijs Van Klaveren (colleage) August 29, 2006
