Sorry Joe !

Joe, your last project was with us in Lommel. The last sculptures you made are still here. We all noticed that you were not the Joe we knew from before. You lost your energy and the spirit. We did not understand what was going on. At the end we found out you were sick, but you didn't want to go to a doctor and went home two days after.
We still don't know if you knew yourself what was going on. You prefered to keep it for yourself.
We are sorry it has to end this way.

Shocking unbelieveble

I can`t find words,
it`s a shocking beat in my body
the feeling you gave
was strange but special
the smile you gave me
with those special eyes
always...

What a character!

First time I meet Joe, was in San Diago, 1996 - the Atlantis projekt. His room was next to mine, and another Dane, a photographer, Thomas, was to share rooms with Joe. I remember opening the door together with Thomas. Joe wasnt in, and the room looked like something from Beirut. The bed, floor even the pictures on the walls were covered with clothes. On the floor was numberless strange flags, toys and whatever and a minute later, Thomas called me from the bathroom: the bathtop was filed with green and red jello-stuff (At that time I didnt know WHAT that was). The thing that reaaly got our attention though, was the red and white policetape, taped to the bedroom floor, in such a way that it looked like a crime scene. Both me and Thomas got nervous: did Thomas' new roommate just die? Was someone just killed in here?

Joe was a character and then some. A real pain in the butt from a distance. But on closer examination - and once you knew him - he was really still a pain in the butt, but somehow a really addictive one. Cause parallel to the bad jokes, noice and craziness was a exceptionally caring, helpful, funny guy - going out of his way to please people, and give them something to enjoy and remember. And even though, Joe was a party man -he had a serious side to him too. When needed he was a good listener and great to talk to.

I for one am gonna miss you Joe. You should have gone out in a way that implied red and white policetape - not cancer. See you on the great pile.

Joe and his bucket full of tricks. Not only for how to build sandsculptures but also on how to crack the whip on your fellow sculptors, righten a wrong with your client, please the audience and how to have fun with eachother whatever the circumstances are on a project.
I'll miss you, dude.

No words to say

"It's very pain full" To listen his demise, as a person to whom I meet and could not forget Joe smile. May God bless his soul.

Joe has always been larger than life

No matter how busy he was, Joe always had time to help. He always had a little sand trick to make sculpting easier and he always had the most hysterical names for sculptures that just weren't reading correctly. His sarcastic remarks were the best. Joe was one of a kind...a real legend.

When he found out that Harrison was calling the first place in the Solo division the JOE MAIZE TROPHY, he said, "Thank God, I was always afraid I'd end up with the Joe Maize Memorial Bathroom Stall #3. The trophy in his honor made him very happy.

He said he'd done things in sand that will never be done again all over the world...that he had a very full life...more than the majority of people.

I love you, Joe
