hey buudeee... i was a rookie sculptor in 1985 when clearwater, florida hosted a competition. I had heard about and patiently awaited the arrival of the crazy partying team from Hawaii.. Joe and Billy Lee. Lo and behold.. they did not dissapoint. They showed up fashionably late after a delivery truck dropped off 5 huge boxes of STUFF. By the time the boxes were empty, you would have thought you were in hawaii. They had their own luau with umbrella drinks, blow up chairs, tiki torches, fake palm trees and my first intruduction to jello shooters. As the years went on, Joe made me feel comfortable by yelling some crazy insult every time we would see each other (that's how you knew joe loved you. the sand world will never be the same without joe. i thank you joe for your blunt honesty, friendship, confiding in me at the end, sharing your fears and wishes and for being my body guard in China. I love you and will miss you dearly. kenzie and kendall say HI. aloha, for now. p.s. did they confiscate youre 5 gallons of pure grain alcohol and 5 pound bags of powdered jello at the pearly gates?

I've worked with Joe for about 25 years and as most of you that knew Joe, you can imagine how difficult that could be at times. Joe was innovative and creative which was his best asset, not his patience, people skills or tact as we all know. Joe was very instrumental in getting Moose's started in Waikiki and California. I learned a lot from him and I think we had a mutual respect for each other. His enthusiasm for his trips were beyond words. The stories he would return with always entertained us. He is gone but not forgotten. I thank all his friends worldwide, "the children of the sand", for all the support you have given. I guess I was the last one to see him, weak and frail in body, but strong in mind til the end. I am grateful to have been his friend and co-worker. -Tony Miloni

To Big Brother

Joe, even though I haven't seen or heard from you since I was 11, I never understood why we couldn't keep in closer contact, but I have never had hard feelings towards you ever in my whole life. From the looks of this website I am glad to feel that there are like me, so many people in the world that loved you and that you touched so many peoples lives. From this site I have learned a lot about you already. I love you big brother always have and always will, and someday hope to see you again. Love, Angie, and your families in arkansas, and california.

One of a kind....

Sometimes I saw fear in your eyes, but with a joke you laughed that away.
We lost a great carver, your last project in Lommel will never be forgotten, there will alawys be sand...

Goodbey Joe

The image that comes to mind these last two days when I here or think of Joe is a moment in Brighton last year: the whole team sits by the fire on the site and finally after the third attempt Joe succeeds in making an air balloon out of a garbage bag. For at least five minutes the garbage bag floats in the sky, slowly drifting further and further away until none of us sees it anymore. More than forty people for minutes fascinated by a Joe-stunt..again...
Be and stay Joe, wherever you are...

A Poem

Sandman is my brother,

His name is Joe.

He lived in sand

As many do know.

His life was great,

He lived it full,

But that was him.

He was Joe Cool.

This man of art

His place was the sand.

He built his castles

In many a land.

To the people who knew him

And if they knew him well,

They know how he was

He gave life hell.

But I know that they loved him

How could you not?

He was different, he was special

He will not be forgot.

Go my brother,

To the sandcastles in the sky.

Your spirit will live on

You did not die.

Thank You Everyone for the overwhelming response for Joe. Yes, he will be truly missed and I know through conversations in his last days that he will miss you all.

The Sandman

I first met Joe in 1991 after he harassed me for three months to allow him to enter the World Championships as a one-man "team" competing against the ten-man teams from the Pacific Northwest. His little buildings, soft-packed and carved with a piece of formica, and his constant interaction with the spectators, led to the creation of the Solo Masters Class in 1992. The winner of this year's Solo Class will hold the Joe Maize Memorial Trophy for the first time. I have a hundred favorite Joe stories, and I am sure they will all be retold on Saturday, Sept 9th when we spread Joe's ashes in Harrison Hot Springs. He will truly always be a part of the Harrison experience.
